Color-Coded At Home Library
Create a at-home library of all of our kids book collections using a color-coded Dewey Decimal System great for your kids! This post has a FREE DOWNLOAD!
This has been in my plans for MONTHS and it finally came to fruition! It is our AT HOME LIBRARY!!! If you know about the Dewey Decimal System, a book organization system that libraries you, it’s very intricate and specific. Which of course is NOT ideal for little kids. So, I decided to make my own system, with the same root concept, except way easier for kids to understand… by using colored washi tape! The concept is: — search for the category of book you want to read about— choose a book — “check out” the book — read the book — put the book back on the shelf within its appropriate category. Super easy for kids to follow! It also teaches them organization and research skills!

Here is a step by step process of how I did it!
Step 1: Purchase a rainbow color collection of Washi Tape.
(A quick side note:I also HIGHLY recommend using “Washi Tape”Washi tape is an ART tape that is sticky, but not super sticky. So it won’t hurt the book’s spine or cover long term. )
Check out the one I used HERE.

Step 2: Remove all of your books from your shelf and divide them up into catagories. For example, you could use catagories like animals, nature, Geography, careers, transportation, world changers etc.

Step 3: Take your washi art tape and assign a specific color to a specific pile of books by topic.

Step 4: Place a small snip of washi tape on the bottom portion of the spine of the book. You need to cut a big enough piece of washi tape so you can see the color on both the front, middle, and back of the spine. Do this to all of your books. But make sure to keep the colors specific to the different topics.

Step 5: Place all of your books back on your shelf in their color group.

Step 6: IF YOU WISH, take a xerox printout of the FREE download linked below. Write in the title of the topics you chose on the line. Again, making sure you are matching the colors to the topics.
Also, I laminated mine so they would last longer. (because...you know.... kids...lol) But this is totally not necessary! If you choose not to laminate, I do recommend to print on higher GSM card stock paper so the dividers are durable.

Step 7: Slide those dividers into place separating the sections of books.

Step 8: If you wish, you can also print the "Home Library" reference page as well as an example of some of the topics I chose!
